THIRTY-SEVEN
BETH (THEN)
The sun is high in the sky this afternoon and I am in the back garden raking up the leaves which have littered the lawn. I feel at peace the most in the autumn time, especially when you can still feel a little warmth from the sun on your cheeks as the leaves rain gently down, covering the ground in warm colours.
I lean the rake against the garage door and rub my hands together to generate some heat. I haven’t seen or heard from Lawrence in over a month and I have come to the conclusion that he has given up on me, thankfully. That was all I wanted. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes with me and he will be able to find someone else and treat them with the respect they deserve.
I step into the house and remove my gardening trainers. I sit them on the back step and close the door, feeling the warmth from the house on my skin. I decide to prepare dinner for later, so I go to the sink to wash my hands and I freeze at what I see.
It’s hanging there, like a little swing on the kitchen tap. My stomach flips and I turn round, running my eyes over the kitchen. There is no one else here. I move quickly into the living room and search upstairs. The house is empty except for me.
I want to scream in frustration and fear. What the hell is wrong with him? Just when I think things are getting better, that he has finally decided to leave me alone, this happens.
I go downstairs and check the front door. It’s locked.
The bastard must’ve snuck in through the back door when I was at the bottom of the garden. Right under my bloody nose.
I go back into the kitchen and pull my phone from my pocket and take a picture. A gold necklace, with the words ‘be mine’ smiling up at me.
I lock the back door before, grabbing the necklace and putting it in the small box I have decided to use to keep all of the items he sends to me so that when the time comes, I can show it to the police. It’ll join the USB stick of songs he said reminds him of me, photographs of us together in the beginning. Receipts from our weekends away, our first meal together. He even stole a pillowcase from the bed where we slept in one of the hotels and I only found out recently when he sent it to me – he said it still smelled of me.
My skin is crawling at the thought that Lawrence has been in my house without my knowledge. What if he comes back and breaks in during the night?
I jump as my phone begins to ring in my hand. Unknown Caller. I hit the end button, but only a few seconds later, it happens again. This time, I answer it.
‘Lawrence? Is that you?’
Silence, saved for a few creepy breathes in my ear.
